和歌山県・九度山町の名前の由来の1つとされる、空海が慈尊院にいる母に会うために月に九度、高野山から降りてきたという物語から、そこまでしても会いたいと思わせる母親の存在や、母子の間に根深く刻まれた縁の強さに興味を持った。本作品では、とある女性が家の中で誰かを待ちながら生活を続ける9つの場面を、断片的な身体のパーツを用いて描いている。
身体パーツのそれぞれには、母子合葬という母子が寄り添う形で埋葬されたシルエットが浮かび上がり、半永久的に途切れることのない
強固な母子像が執拗なまでに暗示される。

I became fascinated by the story—said to be one of the origins of the name of Kudoyama Town in Wakayama Prefecture—in which Kūkai is said to have descended from Mount Kōya nine times a month to visit his mother at Jison-in Temple. This story made me reflect on the presence of a mother whom one would go to such lengths to see, and on the profound bond deeply ingrained between mother and child. In this work, I depict nine scenes of a woman continuing her daily life while waiting for someone inside her home, using fragmented body parts.
Within each body part, the silhouette of a mother and child buried together—a “mother-child joint burial”—emerges, relentlessly suggesting an indestructible, semi-permanent bond between mother and child that will never be severed.

作者は、自身の祖先が北海道・十勝清水町の開拓に携わり、その祖先の名前が刻まれた開拓碑が清水町に建てられているという話を知ったことをきっかけに、開拓碑の在りかを調査をし始めた。しかし、開拓碑の目撃者からの証言はいずれも曖昧であり、清水町の役所にも開拓碑が存在したという記録は一切残されていなかった。そこで作者は、不明瞭でまるで幽霊のような存在となっている開拓碑に注目し、目撃者の証言や親族の協力を得て、雪を使い、清水町内で開拓碑の再建を試みる。この開拓碑の存在は、開拓の歴史や祖先の記憶との間で複雑に浮かび上がる。

The author began investigating the location of a pioneer monument after learning that her ancestors had been involved in the settlement of Shimizu Town in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, and that a monument bearing their names had been erected there. However, the testimonies of those who claimed to have seen the monument were all vague, and the Shimizu Town government office had no records whatsoever indicating that such a monument had ever existed. Consequently, the artist focused on the monument—which had become an obscure, almost ghostly presence—and, with the help of eyewitness accounts and relatives, attempted to reconstruct it within Shimizu Town using snow. The existence of this monument emerges in a complex interplay between the history of settlement and the memory of ancestors.

本作は、主に東北地方で活躍していた盲目の女旅芸人・瞽女の調査を元にしている。瞽女は少数のグループで村々を周り、色々な唄を披露していた。中でも「へそ穴口説き」という唄は、へそ穴が体にある耳や口などの穴には音楽や食などの娯楽があるにも関わらず、自分には楽しみが何も無いと嘆き、愚痴をこぼす。2番の歌詞では、性行為を非常にユーモラスな比喩表現で描かれており、瞽女唄の中でも異彩を放つこの唄から、異性交流が禁止という瞽女の掟の中で生きる彼女達の存在が浮き彫りになっていると感じた。作家は瞽女という立場を超えた女性性に焦点を当て、彼女達と向き合うことを試みた。
本展では、映画監督である伊東喜雄氏の協力の下、実際の瞽女唄の音源を使用し、焼き物の中から微かにへそ穴口説きが聞こえる。触覚と聴覚を通じて、今はいない彼女達の存在がより鮮明に浮かび上がる。

This work is based on research into the “Gōze”—blind female traveling performers who were active primarily in the Tohoku region. The Goze traveled from village to village in small groups, performing a variety of songs. Among them, the song “Hesoana Kudoki” laments that while other body orifices, such as the ears and mouth, have pleasures like music and food, the navel has none, and the singer vents her frustrations. In the second verse, sexual intercourse is depicted using highly humorous metaphors. I felt that this song, which stands out even among Goze songs, highlights the existence of these women living under the Gōze code that forbids interaction with the opposite sex. The artist focused on their femininity beyond their status as Gōze and attempted to engage with them.
In this exhibition, with the cooperation of film director Yoshio Ito, actual recordings of blind women’s songs are used, and faint echoes of the “Hesoana Kudoki” can be heard from within the sclpture of terracotta. Through touch and hearing, the presence of these women, who are no longer with us, emerges more vividly.
